Practical health advice, straight to your inbox, every morning. Why can the number on your scales stay stuck for weeks while the most dangerous fat in your body is quietly shrinking? Visceral fat sits deep around your liver and gut, and it keeps feeding chronic inflammation, insulin resistance and fatty liver long before your weight gives anything away. Here I look at two everyday habits that go after it, a colourful Mediterranean diet rich in polyphenols and fibre, and a couple of interval cardio sessions a week, and how together they can lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. In this video I talk through two habits that target visceral fat, one on your plate and one in the way you exercise. The first is eating plenty of colourful plants packed with polyphenols, the natural compounds behind the deep purple of blueberries, the red of tomatoes and the green of leafy veg and extra virgin olive oil. I cover the MRI trials where people on a greener, polyphenol rich Mediterranean diet lost around twice as much visceral fat even though their weight barely changed, and why the fibre, healthy fats and home cooking that come with all that colour matter just as much as the colour itself. The second habit is interval cardio, short bursts of hard effort with easier recovery in between. I explain how it builds your VO2 max, one of the strongest predictors of how long and how well you live, and how it helps your muscles handle blood sugar, protects muscle, improves sleep and lifts your mood. I also show you the Hume Body Pod, which I use at home to see what is happening to my muscle and body fat, because weight on its own can hide a lot of progress. In this video you'll learn: -What visceral fat is and why it drives inflammation around the body -How a high polyphenol Mediterranean diet shrank visceral fat on MRI scans -Why the scales can hide real fat loss and muscle gain -How fibre, gut bacteria and short chain fatty acids help calm inflammation -Cheap ways to eat more colour, from frozen berries to tinned beans -What interval cardio is and how it improves your VO2 max -How intervals help with insulin sensitivity, sleep, mood and time spent sitting -Who should speak to their doctor before trying hard intervals Whether you want to shift stubborn tummy fat, bring your blood sugar down or simply feel fitter and stronger as you get older, you can start with just one of these habits this week and let the rest follow.
