PC test gameplay of Shadow of the Tomb Raider with ultra graphics. Recorded using Windows 10 64-bit on the mid-2014 MacBook Pro via Boot Camp. Rather than using the Intel Iris integrated graphics card inside the MacBook Pro, I used an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super inserted inside an eGPU box connected by Thunderbolt. FPS is shown in the top right corner of the game screen. Because this is in 4K, high-resolution monitors are recommended to easily see the FPS displayed. ***The following text was copied from the original video showcasing GTX 1070 gameplay of Rise of the Tomb Raider. This applies to this current video since my computer configuration did not change aside from my GPU. Even after about three years of using an eGPU setup, it has remained consistent. However, the CPU is something that can prove to be an obstacle in the years to come. The GPU is designed to be played at 4K; any resolution other than this one can easily put a strain on the CPU. It is imperative that one does complete research on their MacBook models to see if their machine can recognize an eGPU without future issues.*** This was a setup that follows much on what 9to5Mac said in his vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN7pr... However, because my MacBook doesn't support Thunderbolt 3, updating the firmware is impossible on this machine. I tried to plug in the Node via the Thunderbolt cable when the Windows logo popped up; unfortunately, the Node and the 2070 Super were not recognized after many attempts. Amazingly, I came across a solution that solved the issue: https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/how-... In this link, I followed the "USB stick creation procedure". I booted into macOS and used this procedure to create a USB drive capable of making my eGPU be recognized on Windows. After I chose BOOTCAMP on Startup Disk, I turned off my computer. Before turning it back on, I plugged in the Node to my MacBook and left the external monitor unplugged for now. I then turned the Node's power switch on, then turned on my MacBook. I pressed and held down the Option key, waited for the disks to appear, and then clicked on "EFI Boot". Windows booted up as usual, and then I went to Device Manager. The RTX 2070 Super didn't pop up in Display Adapters until two minutes later. The graphics card automatically downloaded drivers right after I booted into Windows, appearing in the tab as expected. I then downloaded the current drivers (if necessary) and restarted the machine. I realized that in order to use this setup daily, you have to keep the USB drive plugged in ALWAYS to boot through EFI Boot and have the eGPU appear on Windows. After everything looked nice and normal, I then plugged the DisplayPort cable from my Acer monitor to the RTX 2070 Super, booted up the computer again, and selected "EFI Boot". Just like that, the monitor came to life, and I was able to use my external display and adjust it to my desires. This build is definitely a risk-taker but an exciting experience. I am able to play games at higher performance levels and resolutions unlike before with my integrated Intel Iris graphics card. I would recommend this project to anyone looking for a more powerful solution but wanting to keep their MacBook as well. Of course, go for a desktop if you want the full power of the card.
