The Why Do You Keep Remembering meme is an unsettling internet trend that blends digital horror, nostalgia, and the Mandela Effect—the phenomenon where many people share a false memory of a detail. Origin of the Trend: • Avocado Animations Video: The concept traces back to a 2023 animated horror short titled Velma meets the original Velma by Avocado Animations. In the short, Scooby-Doo acts as a dark entity that kills characters, rebuilds the world, and wipes everyone's memories. When Velma remembers past timelines, Scooby-Doo angrily asks, "Why do you keep remembering?". • TikTok Explosion: In March 2026, creators turned the quote into a viral video format. How the Meme Works: • Uncanny / Altered Images: Videos feature fast slideshows of extremely famous interne memes, pop-culture icons, or historical images where something is slightly off, missing, or swapped (e.g., a monkey with human teeth, a modified character from The Amazing Digital Circus or Five Nights at Freddy's). • The "Gaslight" Effect: The edits are paired with haunting audio—most notably the track "Dialtone" by Toby Fox—making your brain feel "itchy" because you know the original image looks different. • Comment Section Roleplay: Commenters lean into the creepiness by pretending the altered image is how it has always looked, acting like the viewer is the broken one for noticing.
