You can't simply make them electric either, because with current battery technology the aircraft would be too heavy to leave the ground. So I removed the engines entirely. The problem then is getting into the sky. Towing it behind another airliner doesn't help, because that one still needs engines. So instead I used the oldest trick in aviation: a balloon filled with 300,000 pounds of helium, with steel ballast underneath to hold it down until release. The aircraft still needs power for its systems, so the fuel tanks were replaced with batteries running an electric APU. That part isn't even far-fetched. Boeing's 787 already uses electric air conditioning packs and doesn't take bleed air from the engines at all. Release the ballast and it climbs. Fast. Possibly too fast. We ended up at 50,000 feet, released the balloon, and became a glider. And from there it actually works. At 50,000 feet an A320 can glide roughly 150 nautical miles, which is comfortably enough to get from Los Angeles to San Diego. We cruised at 376 knots ground speed in complete silence, descending at 1,800 feet per minute, with no fuel burn at all. The problems are everything else. The autopilot thinks it's in a dual engine failure, because technically it is. You get one shot at the landing with no go-around. There's no reverse thrust. And as I discovered on the runway, no engines also means no hydraulic pressure for the brakes or nose wheel steering. Also, dumping 300,000 pounds of helium into the atmosphere every flight isn't harmful exactly, but helium is a genuinely finite resource, so this isn't as green as it sounds. Every flight becomes a near disaster. But it worked, roughly one time in five.
