In the global meetings industry, scale has long been a prized asset. Yet in an era increasingly defined by automation, data analytics and artificial intelligence, the ability to combine international reach with personal service may prove to be the more valuable currency. That was the message emerging from a brief but revealing conversation with JTB Meetings & Events Asia Pacific at their JTB booth on the bustling exhibition floor of The Meetings Show Asia Pacific in Singapore earlier this year. Amid the noise of one of the region's most important gatherings for the business events sector, the Japanese-headquartered company offered a snapshot of both the opportunities and challenges shaping the MICE industry across Asia Pacific. JTB is hardly a newcomer to the global travel landscape. The company operates one of the world's largest travel and tourism networks and has steadily expanded its meetings and events operations across international markets. From its regional headquarters in Singapore, JTB Meetings & Events oversees activities across 11 countries, including Australia, New Zealand and much of Southeast Asia, providing a significant footprint at a time when corporate travel and business events continue their post-pandemic recovery. What distinguishes the company's regional approach is the depth of its local presence. The extensive network displayed across its Asia Pacific map is not simply a record of destinations where events have been held but a reflection of physical branch offices operating on the ground. In a business where local knowledge, cultural understanding and supplier relationships remain critical, that infrastructure represents a competitive advantage that many rivals struggle to replicate. The outlook, according to Mizuho Hara, Regional Manager for Events & Promotions and Head of Strategic Partnerships & Relationship Management for the SMM Business Division at JTB Asia Pacific Headquarters in Singapore, remains positive. Demand for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions has continued to gather momentum throughout the region. Asia Pacific remains one of the world's most dynamic business events markets, supported by expanding corporate investment, growing regional integration and the continued rise of multinational operations across Southeast Asia. At the same time, the industry is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Organisations are no longer simply measuring attendance numbers or event satisfaction scores. They want comprehensive visibility into the value generated by their meetings portfolios. To address this, JTB has expanded its Strategic Meetings Management division, a service that consolidates meeting data across organisations and provides clients with greater oversight of costs, performance and return on investment. Such capabilities are becoming increasingly important as procurement departments seek tighter control over corporate spending while executive teams demand clearer evidence of business outcomes. Geopolitical uncertainty remains a concern. The conflict in the Middle East casted a shadow over global travel markets and supply chains during discussions at The Meetings Show back in April 2026. Yet, notably, JTB reported that cancellations have remained limited so far, suggesting that many organisations continue to prioritise face-to-face engagement despite broader economic and political turbulence. Perhaps most interesting is the company's position on artificial intelligence. While AI is rapidly becoming embedded throughout the travel and events ecosystem, JTB's approach remains measured. The technology is viewed primarily as an enabling tool rather than a replacement for human interaction. In an industry built upon relationships, trust and cultural nuance, that distinction matters. Sustainability also continues to influence decision-making, although JTB's strategy reflects a growing trend among event organisers. Rather than imposing a standardised sustainability framework, the company increasingly works alongside clients to tailor environmental initiatives according to individual corporate objectives. For the wider tourism and business events sector, the message is clear. Technology, data and sustainability will continue to shape the industry's future. Yet even in an increasingly digital world, the fundamentals remain surprisingly unchanged. Relationships, local expertise and personal service continue to be the foundations upon which successful meetings and events are built. Filmed on 15 April 2026 at The Meetings Show 2026 in Singapore
