At a time when every rupee matters, Chandrababu believes that the state cannot afford to watch millions of cubic feet of precious Godavari floodwater flow into the sea during the monsoon without making use of it. This determination has led him to push forward this ambitious project. During the rainy season, the Godavari River swells, and huge quantities of water flow wastefully into the sea. At the same time, farmers in drought-prone Rayalaseema struggle because of insufficient water supplies. The primary objective of the project is to address this imbalance by diverting surplus Godavari water to permanently reduce water scarcity in Rayalaseema. Drawing inspiration from the Ken–Betwa river-linking project being implemented in central India, Chandrababu has reportedly taken a detailed proposal to Delhi. The proposed route involves transferring Godavari water through the Polavaram project to the Krishna River basin and then pumping it towards the Penna River through Srisailam and Banakacherla. The ultimate goal is to divert approximately 148 TMC of Godavari water directly towards Rayalaseema. This massive project requires thousands of crores of rupees in investment, making it difficult for the state government to implement it independently. Therefore, Chandrababu has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish a National Water Grid, similar to the Power Grid and National Highway Grid. He has proposed that the Godavari–Penna linking project be taken up as the first pilot project under this initiative and completed with 100% funding from the Central Government. With the support of the NDA alliance, the proposal has reportedly received a positive response from the Centre. This project illustrates how a leader can use his political influence at the national level not to seek personal positions or benefits, but to secure a brighter future for his state.
