There’s lots of nuances when glazing pottery. I think that from an outsider’s perspective it might often look as if you’re just dipping the pot in and taking it out, but in reality, there’s a whole trove of additional thoughts and steps that are being followed in order to get the glaze to adhere to the pot in the way you intend.   If done well, (for me and with the bowls I make), I’m able to coat the vessel in an even layer but I also intentionally catch some excess glaze inside, which I can then swirl around to increase the internal thickness. This does two things, it increases the interest in the glazes surface as the thicker it is, the more the fractal/petal shapes appear, and as this happens on the inside of the pot, there’s no risk that it can melt and flow off of the pot, which is what would probably happen if I applied this extra thickness on the exterior.   That manoeuvre is paired with shaking the vessel to dislodge any pesky globs of glaze from the foot-ring and in the very moment the bowl is drawn out of the glaze, I have to tip out what’s trapped in that foot in such a way that it doesn’t splash and disturb the glazes that’s already adhered to the outer surface…   There’s a lot to think about. If it’s done sloppily and inaccurately, well, then I’ll have to spend more time cleaning up each individual pot, whereas if it’s done accurately, the opposite is true and the faster I’m able to work. Still, with that being said, I still muck up rather a lot. Fluid dynamics, angular forms and a glaze that’s tremendously thick doesn’t make for the easiest glazing process…   #pottery #glazing #glaze #bowl #ceramics
