The engine control unit periodically stores fault codes related to incorrect air-fuel mixture formation and possible problems with the EGR system. • However, the EGR valve itself may be working perfectly: opening and closing correctly and responding to commands from the engine control unit. That does not necessarily mean the entire exhaust gas recirculation system is operating efficiently. • The actual problem may be inside the intake system. With predominantly urban driving, soot, oil deposits and carbon buildup gradually accumulate in the intake manifold and cylinder head ports. These deposits restrict airflow, meaning the actual air supply may no longer match the engine’s calculated requirements. • In this video, I show the complete process of inspecting and cleaning the intake system on the BMW N47D20D. First, I remove the intake manifold, throttle body and other necessary components to inspect the level of contamination. Then I mechanically remove the carbon deposits, wash the components and thoroughly dry them before reassembly. • I also clean the intake ports and valves directly inside the cylinder head using walnut blasting equipment. Crushed walnut shells are delivered under pressure onto the contaminated surfaces, while a vacuum system removes the loosened carbon deposits, dirt and walnut shell residue from the working area. • Once the cleaning is complete, I prepare the components for reassembly and install new sealing elements. This particular intake manifold design uses an interesting solution: instead of a separate gasket between the intake manifold and cylinder head, the complete swirl flap assembly with its integrated seal is replaced. • Finally, I reassemble the intake system and show the condition of the components before and after cleaning, followed by the first engine start. • This repair demonstrates how heavily a BMW N47 diesel intake system can become contaminated even with just over 90,000 km. It also explains why an EGR-related fault code should not automatically lead to EGR valve replacement without first inspecting the entire intake system.
