In the English Channel, between England and France, lies a tiny island where cars are banned, the streets have no lights, and until surprisingly recently, the whole place was ruled like something out of the Middle Ages. Welcome to Sark ā for more than 400 years, the last feudal territory in Europe. In this 4K travel documentary, we explore how people live on Sark, a two-square-mile island of just 500 people that belongs to the British Crown yet governs itself. For centuries it was ruled by a hereditary lord known as the Seigneur, under a feudal system granted by Queen Elizabeth I back in 1565 ā a system that only came to an end in 2008, when the island finally voted to become a democracy. Yet in many ways, Sark still feels frozen in time. There are no cars here ā only tractors, bicycles, and horse-drawn carriages, and even the ambulance is towed behind a tractor. There are no street lights either, which is exactly why Sark became the world's first Dark Sky Island, with some of the clearest, darkest, most star-filled skies in Europe. We explore daily life on this car-free island, cross the dizzying clifftop path of La CoupĆ©e, visit the Seigneur's historic manor of La Seigneurie, and find out what it's really like to live in one of the last truly quiet corners of the modern world. This is life on Europe's last feudal island ā a place that chose to keep the past alive. š Subscribe to Edge Tales for weekly 4K travel documentaries on how people live in the world's most remote and unusual places. ā±ļø Chapters: 0:00 The Last Feudal State in Europe 2:20 An Island Frozen Outside Time 05:56 How One Medieval Deal Shaped Four Centuries 10:53 When Medieval Laws Never Disappeared 12:57 The Billionaires Who Declared War on Sark 17:01 Life After the Middle Ages 19:40 Inside Europe's Quietest Community 23:48 Freedom Comes at a Price 26:23 How an Island of 500 People Survives 28:43 The Unexpected Wonders of Sark 32:20 The Pieces of History Still Hanging On 34:41 Can Sark Survive the Future? 36:48 What Remains of Europe's Last Feudal Kingdom ā¶ļø More remote islands: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPYti0D0aWBA #Sark #ChannelIslands #travel #documentary #islandlife #feudal #traveldocumentary
