Thomas Midgley Jr. was an American engineer whose inventions helped transform modern cars and refrigeration. But two of his most famous discoveries also caused enormous damage to human health and the environment. How did one inventor contribute to two global environmental disasters and eventually die in a machine of his own design? In 1921, Thomas Midgley discovered that adding tetraethyl lead to petrol could prevent engine knocking. General Motors and its partners commercialised leaded gasoline under the brand name Ethyl. Despite the known dangers of lead poisoning, leaded petrol became widely used around the world. In October 1924, five workers at a New Jersey manufacturing plant died from lead poisoning. Midgley even publicly handled and inhaled the chemical's fumes to demonstrate its supposed safety. His second major innovation came in 1928, when Midgley and his team developed chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants, commonly known as Freon. Although these chemicals offered a safer alternative to many older refrigerants, scientists later discovered that CFCs could damage Earth's protective ozone layer. Their use was eventually restricted under the 1987 Montreal Protocol. Then came Midgley's third remarkable invention. After contracting polio in 1940, he designed a rope-and-pulley system to help himself move from bed. On November 2, 1944, he died from strangulation involving the device. Although commonly described as an accident, historical death records listed suicide. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, eliminating leaded petrol is estimated to prevent more than 1.2 million premature deaths annually. Meanwhile, scientists project that the Antarctic ozone layer could recover to its 1980 condition around 2066, assuming continued compliance with international environmental agreements. In this video, discover the extraordinary and tragic story of Thomas Midgley Jr., leaded gasoline, Freon, the ozone layer and the unexpected consequences of technological inventions.
