Rick Collins gave up a shot at going pro in bodybuilding to go to law school. The same year steroids became a controlled substance, he hung out his shingle as a lawyer. Timing, as he puts it, is everything. Rick Collins is the only attorney in the United States who has built an entire career at the intersection of bodybuilding and law. He represented the IFBB. He consulted on the documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster. He spent time in Arnold Schwarzenegger's office before he was governor. He represented Sylvester Stallone's supplement company. He has practiced in 40 federal courthouses across the country and handled doping cases internationally. There is no other lawyer who does what he does. None of it was planned. He was a 19-year-old competitive bodybuilder working three jobs — nightclub bouncer, personal trainer, nursing home orderly — when he got accepted to law school on a scholarship. A gym manager pulled him aside after a show and told him he should have won, offered to put him on a program and take him pro. He chose law school instead. Then the 1990 Steroid Control Act passed the same year he opened his firm. Suddenly gym owners were being arrested. Judges, prosecutors, and defence lawyers had no idea what anabolic steroids even were. Collins did. He had the courtroom skills and the gym knowledge simultaneously, and nobody else came close to having both. That gap became his entire career. The deeper point he makes is about what bodybuilding itself builds in a person. Patience. Perseverance. The ability to find a way around a problem when an injury sidelines you, when life gets in the way, when the result you want is still months or years out. Nobody grows an 18-inch arm by accident. That same capacity for long-term commitment, he argues, transfers directly into everything else.
