THINGS TO KNOW FOR VISITING VENICE Venice was the first place in a long time that managed to challenge my beliefs about being able to travel affordably & enjoy it. I’d been dreaming about visiting Venice for a long time and expected it to be similar to most of Italy when it comes to good food & hidden gems. Unfortunately, Venice became difficult to love the second we set foot outside the train station and were greeted with a busy square and people following you, trying to get you to buy their luggage carrying services. Our accommodation was only a six minute walk from the station, so we were already convinced that we were going to walk. This was before we realized that there are bridges everywhere. That doesn’t really seem as much of a big deal until you actually see the bridges. They’re elevated so boats can go underneath, with stairs on both sides. Carrying your luggage there is the worst idea, even if it’s just a ‘’six minute walk’’. Our walk had four elevated bridges and it was actually a 20-minute nightmare. It was so bad that when we departed the city to the airport, we splurged on a 140 EUR water taxi to get there straight from our accommodation. Venice isn’t as walkable as it may seem, and transportation is expensive. Then it was the food. I’ve never put so much effort into searching for good food but feeling so much disappointment each time we walked past places that were supposed to be good, or decided to try one. Most places were either shut-down, or way too expensive for what they were doing and/or had a lot of bad reviews. The few good places were mostly in a café setting, bakeries or quick spots for aperitivo. Most sit-down restaurants were unimpressive. We had one expensive last dinner, and that was good, but I’ve still had better food experiences for less in many other places around Italy. I’m not sure if it was bad luck, or if the style of travelling & budget that we intended to have just didn’t work with Venice, but I don’t plan on coming back anytime soon although it truly was a beautiful city. Have you ever visited Venice? Can you relate or do you have a completely different experience? Let me know in the comments! #italy #venice
