Did Moses play cops and robbers too not exactly but many of the laws you have in your time originated with laws that god gave to Moses really start at the beginning abraham well when last we saw moses and the israelites they had just escaped pharaoh's armies at the red sea that was so cool but now they had new difficulties to face now that they were away from the wicked pharaoh they didn't have to follow his rules. That sounds like a good thing it was but that meant the people weren't quite sure what rules they were supposed to have couldn't they just listen to moses they could and they did the problem was that moses was only one man and there were thousands of israelites needing guidance when they first got to the wilderness moses would sit in a chair all day while people crowded around to ask him questions moses would ask god what the answers should be and tell the people those answers that's a lot of questions which is why moses was getting very tired when his father-in-law jethro came to visit he was concerned about moses trying to answer everyone's questions all the time jethro told moses it was too much for one man he suggested moses choose some trustworthy men who could also use the spirit to give people answers you mean like how we have bishops and stuff exactly like that in your time you have a prophet who tells you what god wants you to know but the prophet would never have time to give personal advice to every single member of the church so there are apostles 70s area leaders stake presidencies and bishoprics the order of leadership goes all the way down so each individual can receive the direct counsel they need did that help moses it did but there was still a question of what general laws the lord wanted them to follow heavenly father told moses to climb up on mount sinai to meet with him there he gave moses a set of eternal laws called the ten commandments these are still part of laws in your day can you guess what some of them are james pretended to break one of the commandments during your game oh don't steal that's right but the very first commandment is the most important first heavenly father said i am the lord thy god have no other gods before me the second commandment is related to the first make no idols or graven images we'll learn more about those two later third don't take the name of the lord in vain what does that mean it means we should never say heavenly father's name in a disrespectful way fourth keep the sabbath day holy that means we show love for heavenly father and jesus by only doing things on sunday that are respectful to them fifth honor your father and mother by listening to them and respecting them sixth don't kill anyone that one's pretty easy to understand seventh don't commit adultery now i'm confused again it means that people who are married shouldn't kiss people who aren't their husband or wife oh like when joseph in egypt won't kiss potiphar's wife exactly like that joseph was a very good example eighth like you told us james don't steal ninth don't bear false witness against your neighbor which means don't lie and the tenth don't covet that means don't want things that other people have too much i'm pretty good at most of these but some of them can be hard telling the truth can be hard sometimes none of us are perfect all the time but the commandments were a good foundation for how to follow god and once the people learned to follow those laws he could teach us more
