In this lecture, I introduce Peter F. Copeland's pioneering book, Working Dress in Colonial and Revolutionary America, a remarkable study of everyday clothing and working life during the colonial and Revolutionary periods. If you can't wait to see what kind of work clothes they were wearing, please click on the chapter at the bottom of the page. While portraits and written records tell us much about wealthy Americans, the clothing of sailors, farmers, artisans, servants, frontier settlers, and enslaved people is often overlooked. Drawing on more than 200 illustrations and numerous historical sources, Copeland reconstructs the appearance and daily lives of ordinary people who helped build early America. This video is part of the Video Course on the History of Western Fashion and the Course on the History of American Fashion. Copeland 著 『Working Dress in Colonial and Revolutionary America』を取り上げます。 7:29 Sailors and fishermen 7:57 Farmers and rural laborers 10:39 Urban workers and artisans 11:34 Merchants and peddlers 13:14 Frontier pioneers 14:10 Transportation workers 15:49 Public servants 17:41 Revolutionary War soldiers 19:39 Intellectual Professionals 21:04 Servants and enslaved people 24:42 Quaker dress and ethnic clothing traditions
