Moana is an extremely interesting film that accomplishes a retelling of a classic story in a brand new way. I enjoyed the film specifically for its visual spectacle, music, and plot. The storyline follows a teenage girl named Moana (Catherine Laga’aia), who follows the call of the Ocean and voyages beyond her island of Motunui, in order to restore the heart of Te Fiti and improve the life of the people in her village. She teams up with Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a demigod who initially angers Te Fiti by stealing her heart. The film is a shot-for-shot remake of the original animated movie from 2016 and, while that may make this film seem unnecessary or redundant at first, it’s actually extremely fascinating. The film doesn’t attempt to replace our love for the original–it supplements it. The fact that the dialogue and emotional beats replicate those from the original emphasize and celebrate the story in a new way. Even though we are familiar with the story of Moana, a live-action retelling is important due to the cultural representation that it provides. To start, the visuals are absolutely amazing. You can really feel the presence and design of the character of the Ocean throughout the film, and the designs of the island of Motunui and the cave that the protagonists find Tamatoa in are absolutely breathtaking. However, there are some parts of the film that don’t translate particularly well to live-action, which can be attributed to its overwhelming use of CGI. However, seeing this live-action version is very interesting, because it represents the Pacific Islander cultures in a realistic way on-screen, and it was fun getting to learn more about that through viewing this film. In addition, I really like the music. Seeing favorite songs like “How Far I’ll Go” or “You’re Welcome” performed in live-action is a really awesome experience, and really highlights how talented Lin-Manuel Miranda is. Furthermore, the choreography, especially during the “Where You Are” sequence really enhances the cultural representation aspect, and seeing the world of Motuinui in real-life really justifies the need for a live-action retelling. The plot was also a major point of interest for me, as I feel that Moana’s journey, especially once Maui gets involved, is both entertaining and meaningful. My favorite part is Catherine Laga'aia's performance as Moana. She really embodies the character, and captures everything about her in a way that I’m not sure anybody else could do. She’s super talented and her performance is faithful to the original character. The film’s message is uplifting–it’s about resilience and doing what’s right. Moana goes on an extremely tough journey to save her village and, even when it’s difficult, she keeps pushing because she knows it’s the right thing to do and will help her island, which is really admirable. I give Moana 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 18, plus adults.
