šŸ“± Holafly eSIM - mobile data the moment you land, no roaming charges: https://holafly.sjv.io/aNDWKQ (code SWISS for a discount) Someone built an entire airbase inside a mountain for X-Plane 12. A 3000 metre runway, hangars, parked Ospreys, fighter jets, a maintenance bay with an A330 up on jacks, and a train running through the middle of it. The blast doors at each end open automatically as you approach, and close behind you once you are through. It is fictional. The idea is not. Yugoslavia built exactly this at Željava, under Gola PljeÅ”evica on what is now the Croatian border. Four tunnel entrances, each sealed by a 100 tonne pressurised door, housing 80 MiG-21s and 3000 people. It took twenty years to build and the Yugoslav army blew up its own runway on the way out. Taiwan has one at Hualien that holds 200 aircraft. Sweden built them from 1941, and designed the Saab Viggen with a folding tail fin specifically so it would fit inside. Switzerland hollowed out six aircraft caverns in the Alps. North Korea has underground hangars at more than twenty airfields. So I wanted to know what it is actually like to fly into one. The answer is terrifying. There is a wall at both ends of your runway. There is a ceiling. A go around is not really a thing. I clipped a wingtip doing a 230 knot low pass in a 777, scraped a wing trying to park it, and tail struck an A380 on the way out because the aircraft wants to rotate while there is still a mountain above it. It does work. It is just enormously expensive, completely unforgiving, and absolutely not something you would ever let a passenger near. Huge thanks to the creator for building this.
