5. Soyuz: A series of spacecraft which has been in service since the 1960s & having made more than 140 flights. It was designed for the Soviet space program by the Korolev Design Bureau (now Energia). The Soyuz succeeded the Voskhod spacecraft & was originally built as part of the Soviet crewed lunar programs. 4. Space Shuttles: A reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated from 1981 to 2011 by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of the Space Shuttle program. 3. Apollo Command & Service Module: One of two principal components of the United States Apollo spacecraft, used for the Apollo program, which landed astronauts on the Moon between 1969 & 1972. The CSM functioned as a mother ship, which carried a crew of three astronauts & the second Apollo spacecraft, the Apollo Lunar Module, to lunar orbit & brought the astronauts back to Earth. 2. Apollo Lunar Module: The lunar lander spacecraft that was flown between lunar orbit & the Moon's surface during the United States' Apollo program. It was the first crewed spacecraft to operate exclusively in space & remains the only crewed vehicle to land anywhere beyond Earth. The main reason I used the Apollo 13 lander photo because she saved the crew. 1. Mercury Space Capsule: The first American spacecraft designed to carry humans into space during NASA's Project Mercury (1961-1963). It was a pressurized capsule built by McDonnell Aircraft, which carried a single astronaut on suborbital or orbital flights launched by Redstone or Atlas rockets. Key components included a reentry capsule, heatshield & parachute & its missions successfully flew six astronauts, paving the way for future programs like Gemini & Apollo.
