Flying Solo from Florida to Alaska: My 78-Hour Journey as a Pilot to the 99 Convention In 1984, I did something most people thought was crazy: I flew a Cessna 182 RG from Jacksonville, Florida, all the way to Anchorage, Alaska. At the time, I was a 34-year-old mother of three who had only been flying for a few years. Why did I do it? Because I never expected to live a long life, and I wanted to experience everything the world had to offer. This video is the story of that 78-hour flight—a journey across the United States and Canada that took me from the heat of Texas to the freezing waters of the North Pacific. I share the terrifying moments, like being ordered by air traffic control to "Pull Up!" while flying blind in the clouds, and the liberating feeling of being "a child of the wind." In this video, I talk about: Conquering Fear: Why I asked for "nose-down spins on my second day of flight school to cure motion sickness. The 1984 Journey: Flying through St. Louis and Texas, up the California coast, and into the rugged wilderness of Ketchikan and Anchorage. Meeting a Legend: The thrill of meeting astronaut Sally Ride at the 99ers convention in Alaska. The Reality of Risk: Why studying and preparation are the difference between life and death in the air. Flying vs. Driving: The unique spatial awareness and freedom that comes with three-dimensional travel. Life Lessons from the Cockpit: How flying changes your confidence and your perspective on the world. Whether you're an aspiring pilot or someone looking for the courage to start your own adventure, I hope my story inspires you to take the "left seat" in your own life.
