An SRE at a B2B SaaS company watched the same payment service get killed every ninety seconds for two days. Liveness probes timing out. CPU pinned at 100 percent processing a backlog. Kubernetes did exactly what it was told, restart the pod, which dropped the in-flight work, which made the backlog worse. Classic restart loop dressed up as a health problem. Here's what I see people get wrong. Teams crank the grace period higher and call it fixed. The probe is still riding the same CPU-bound thread pool as the real work, so under load it always loses. Three moves that actually hold: 1. Split the liveness endpoint onto a separate lightweight handler, off the busy thread pool entirely. Now the probe answers in milliseconds even when the worker is buried. 2. Stop conflating liveness with readiness. Liveness means "is this process wedged". Readiness means "should traffic come here right now". A backlogged pod is unready, not unhealthy. 3. Watch `container_cpu_cfs_throttled_seconds_total` before you touch probe timings. If the pod is throttled, the probe was never the real problem, the CPU limit was. The architecture problem is still there. But the bleeding stops while you fix it properly. What's the worst restart loop you've untangled? Tags: #Kubernetes #PlatformEngineering #SRE #DevOps
