The most delicate part of building a bicycle wheel is also its smallest — and the fix shown here is the least technical material in the workshop. Deep-section rims hide their spoke nipples down inside the rim channel, far beyond the reach of any finger. The nipples themselves are short, smooth and round, with almost nothing to grip. The solution in this video: wrap a strip of paper around the spoke a few turns, poke that paper plug into the hollow nipple, twist — and the paper spins the nipple straight onto the threads. ※ Key Features & Innovation Highlights: ▪ ※ Why such a tiny part wins so many fights. A spoke nipple is barely bigger than a shirt button, with smooth sides that give fingers and pliers nothing to hold. In deep aero rims it must be dropped down a long channel first, where a slip sends it rattling into the rim's double walls — a sound wheel builders dread. Starting the threads by feel at that depth, at the right angle, without crossing them, is the slowest step of the whole build. That is why every wheel builder has a private arsenal of tricks for this one part. ▪ ※ The paper works as a disposable collet. Wrapped tightly around the spoke, the paper swells into the nipple's hollow bore and grips it by pure friction — the same principle a drill chuck or a machinist's screw starter uses. Now twisting the paper twists the nipple, keeping it perfectly lined up with the spoke's axis as the first threads engage. It is throwaway engineering: costs nothing, works every time, and can be torn free the moment the nipple is seated. ▪ ※ The first few threads decide the wheel's health. A nipple started crooked will cross-thread, and a crossed aluminum nipple on a steel spoke ruins both — usually discovered only after the wheel is tensioned and the thread strips under load. Two or three clean, straight turns by hand or by paper are worth more than any amount of later truing. A drop of lubricant on the threads before starting also protects the soft nipple metal from galling as tension climbs. ▪ ※ The paper is one member of a big improvising family. Ask around and every mechanic owns a favorite: a sharpened old spoke, a cotton swab cut at an angle, a matchstick, a kebab skewer, a length of cable. The pro version is a spare spoke with a nipple locked on as a depth stop — a proper nipple driver that starts each nipple with exactly the same number of turns. Production wheel factories go further, spinning nipples on with a battery drill and a driver bit, lacing a front wheel in minutes. ▪ ※ If one escapes, the rim holds it hostage. A nipple lost inside a double-wall rim rattles at every bump, and getting it out is its own sport: shake the wheel with the valve hole down, fish for it with a strip of sticky tape, or even vacuum it out. Which is exactly why experienced builders prevent the escape — the paper trick not only starts the nipple, it never lets go of it in the first place. Practical Notes: wrap the paper snugly, not loosely — a fat plug grips, a thin one slips; tear the paper out gently the moment the nipple takes real threads; keep a few strips pre-cut before lacing starts; and when tensioning later, use a proper spoke wrench so the freshly saved threads are never chewed back off.
