In Battle 3 of our 6th Generation Air Combat series, we simulate a high-stakes future naval warfare scenario testing the capabilities of America’s next-generation carrier air wing against China. The Mission: Defend Scarborough Shoal In this fictional future conflict, Chinese forces launch an assault on Scarborough Shoal, where US engineers are carrying out military construction. With personnel under immediate threat, a US Navy carrier strike group must cover the 600-mile distance and secure the airspace within an hour to enable their rescue. A Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier group launches a powerful mix of current and next-generation aircraft for a long-range air combat mission. US Navy Aircraft and Weapons: F/A-XX – Next-generation carrier-based fighter designed for long-range air superiority and extended endurance. FQ-44 – Future autonomous combat aircraft providing additional numbers and air combat capability. F-35C Lightning II – Stealth fighter equipped with AARGM-ER anti-radiation missiles. MQ-25 Stingray – Carrier-based aerial refuelling drone extending fighter range and endurance. EA-18G Growler – Electronic warfare aircraft tasked with disrupting enemy radar and communications. F/A-18E Super Hornet – Multirole fighter armed with AGM-158C LRASM anti-ship missiles. Chinese Forces and Threats The US carrier air wing faces a formidable combination of future Chinese naval and air power, including: Type 076 amphibious assault ships operating as part of the opposing force. GJ-11 stealth combat drones. J-36 and J-50 next-generation Chinese fighters. PL-16 advanced air-to-air missiles. The F/A-XX and FQ-44 must establish air superiority using AIM-260 missiles while the MQ-25 provides continuous aerial refuelling. Meanwhile, EA-18G Growlers conduct electronic warfare operations, and F-35Cs and Super Hornets target enemy naval assets. Can the US Carrier Air Wing Win? Can a 2030s US Navy carrier air wing defend Scarborough Shoal, defeat the attacking forces and hold the airspace long enough to rescue the personnel? This fictional military simulation explores why range, endurance, stealth, electronic warfare, autonomous combat aircraft and aerial refuelling could be decisive in future naval warfare. My prediction is that only a fully integrated 2030s carrier air wing—with F/A-XX endurance, FQ-44 numbers, MQ-25 refuelling and the strike capabilities of the F-35C and Super Hornet—could have a realistic chance of completing this demanding mission. Watch Battle 3 of our future air combat series and decide for yourself: could America's next-generation carrier air wing prevail against China's emerging military aviation capabilities? This is a fictional, speculative military scenario exploring projected future aircraft and capabilities, not a report of an actual conflict.
