Melody recognises where she is by the sounds she hears. Melody hears the busy road and waits to cross with her mum. When she hears the peeping sound to indicate the green man, they both cross the road. Once in the park the sounds around them change. Melody and her mum settle down for their picnic but are soon interrupted by a buzzy bee. Melody listens to ‘Flight of the Bumble Bee’ by Rimsky Korsakov and is transported into an animated world where she imagines shrinking in size so that she is small like an insect. She meets a bee who appears to be lost. Melody offers to help the bee remember what he has flown past and retrace his steps. Melody and Fudge jump on the bee. The bee remembers a man playing a flute, birds singing in a tree and water falling. All the friends work together and retrace the bee’s steps. By doing this, he manages to find his way home to the other bees. On the way home from the picnic, Melody listens out for the familiar sounds she heard on the way out. She knows that she is nearly home when she hears the waterfalls. This clip is from the BBC series Melody. Wonderful series starring Melody, a young partially sighted girl with an incredible imagination, who visualizes stories and characters conjured up by classical music. This is a great series to encourage children to use their imaginations. Play some sounds and ask children what they think of when they hear the sounds. They could write the ideas down. Play Flight of the Bumble Bee to the class, or an alternative piece of classical music. Can they come up with a short story around the music? Ask children what sounds they hear everyday (maybe write them down) and whether they remind them of certain locations. This clip will be relevant for teaching Music at KS1 and pre-school age. ===================== For more clips from other subjects at the BBC Teach YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/bbcteach More from BBC Learning Zone: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone More resources from BBC Bitesize: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education ===================== Subscribe to create your own customised playlists, and get notified about our latest clips.
