Minions and Monsters is a wholesome animated comedy that returns to the roots of the original Minions while acting as a love letter to the Golden Age of Hollywood! The film’s fresh story, playful humour, references to early filmmaking, stunning animation and newer characters are some of the highlights. While the pace may be visually overstimulating for some, there is still great attention to detail. The storyline is centered around a dynamic duo—James and Henry (Pierre Coffin), who are a part of a Minions tribe travelling across the globe to serve the most evil master. Eventually, they accidentally step foot into Hollywood as they achieve short-lived fame, and James and Henry aspire to be filmmakers. Blinded by ambition, they conjure up the most dangerous monsters from a spellbook to star in their movie. With the help of the other Minions, James and Henry must save the world before it gets overtaken by monsters! With the introduction of new characters and cartoonish villains, this film remains as a meaningful period piece to the Minions franchise. While the movie mostly appeals to younger audiences, there is something for older audiences to enjoy, especially cinephiles. The movie pays beautiful homage to Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Llyod, who were silent-film stars and comedy pioneers. The transition from silent films to the rise of talking pictures, is also portrayed seamlessly as the Minions try to adjust to the new technology. While the film brings back the Minions, all voiced by Pierre Coffin, newer characters—Dort (Jesse Eisenberg), Debbie (Zoey Deutch), Olivia (Allison Janney), Goomi (Trey Parker), Max (Christoph Waltz), Frank and Elwood (Jeff Bridges), Phillips (Bobby Moynihan), Howard (Phil LaMarr), shine in their respective roles. Eisenberg, who is new to the franchise, contributes an unexpectedly funny, yet deadpan performance as Dort. His character which pays homage to Gort, from the 1950s classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still, does not feel out of place. Goomi, voiced by Trey Parker, acts as a cute, but misleading character with extreme ambitions. In terms of animation, the film retains its signature glossiness and fluidity and experiments with vibrant colors that capture the changing time periods. The story is also surprisingly fresh, as it involves high-stakes world domination, the allure of Hollywood and a romantic sub-plot between Debbie, a suffragette, and Dort, an alien-robot. Although the fast pacing may feel overwhelming for some scenes, the visual imagery that surrounds the characters is abundant with references, period-specific details and delightful Easter eggs! The film’s message explores the importance of making movies and chasing your dreams in the midst of corporate greed. Be aware, there are instances of crude humour, violence and mild profanity. Minions and Monsters gets 4 out of 5 stars from me and I recommend it for ages 8 to 12, plus adults.
