See why NASA’s budget isn’t a waste and is actually tiny compared to our other big expense! People think that the amount we spend on NASA is a waste, but we get a lot in return for it. Defense or military spending is by far the biggest expense in the federal budget. Do we really need to have such a huge military, which only seems to make us more eager to give them something to shoot at? It’s true that people often ask why we give so much money to NASA. Many people don’t see the sense of giving money to an agency which essentially spends money on sending things up into space. While it’s true that NASA’s $17 billion isn’t measly, we get a pretty decent return. The agency attracts the brightest minds to our shores, the technology can be exported to other nations and entities, for a tidy sum. Satellite technology, which aids our increasingly inter-connected world wouldn’t exist without the help of NASA. Now $17 billion really pales in comparison to the almost $1 trillion-dollar budget we have for the US military, including defense spending. Recent proposals even have it going over $1t for the next fiscal year. Now isn’t it better to ask whether we really need to be spending this much on defense? I am all for having a powerful military, but do we really need close to 1,000 military bases on foreign soil, and a bigger military expenditure than the next 4 countries combined. Now that includes Russia, China, and the UK, which themselves have pretty hefty budgets! Since they fall of the USSR and end of the Cold War, can we really justify such spending when we still don’t have universal single payer healthcare or free education up to university level? These would cost a fraction of these budgets and potentially could really help raise tax revenues when we have a healthier and better education population. Let’s not forget that we became independent from an empire all those years ago. We shouldn’t be emulating the evils of the past in the name of spreading democracy and protecting our interests.
