Now the PWD has sent a proposal to the state government to allow the public to remove silt from the dam in an organised manner at a nominal cost, which could bring revenue to the tune of Rs 212 crore to the state. For the purpose, the PWD would have to lay roads to the dam site to allow vehicles to access it. The cost for laying the roads, from Andipatti, Theni and Periyakulam in Theni district, was estimated to be around Rs 9 crore. The executive engineer, Periyar Vaigai division, PWD, T Subramanian, said that 33 million cubic meters (MCM) of sand could be removed from the water spread, which is usually exposed during most of the time of the year except in October and November. The silt removal from the 24sqkm water spread area would take nine years as per the current estimate. Although the 126-year-old Mullaperiyar dam is located in Kerala, it is operated by the government of Tamil Nadu which signed a 999-year lease agreement with the former British government to irrigate farmland on its side.
