For nine years, the most traveled member of the United States Postal Service was a stray dog who had never been hired, never been paid, and never once stamped a letter. One cold night in Albany, New York, mail clerks found a scruffy terrier asleep on a pile of empty mailbags. He would not leave them. So they let him stay and named him Owney. Owney loved those bags. He followed them onto the wagons, and then one day onto a mail train. It pulled out, and he was gone. He came back days later. Then he left again. 🐕 Soon he was riding the rails like an employee, sleeping on the bags and guarding them so fiercely only men in postal uniforms could touch them. Clerks swore he brought good luck to any train he rode. Every station he passed through added a tag to his collar, until he jingled like sleigh bells and the Postmaster General himself gave him a jacket to carry them all. In 1895 he went around the world by train and steamship, collecting medals from foreign postal services, and made it home by Christmas. More than 140,000 miles. Over a thousand tags. The most famous dog in America. When he died in 1897, the clerks who loved him raised the money to have him preserved. Today Owney stands in the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum, still wearing his jacket, still covered in tags. In 2011 he got his own stamp. Follow for more incredible true stories from history.
