Imagine a world where you are a policeman having to investigate an murder case, but the real detectives solving the mystery are the sheep from a nearby pasture. The Sheep Detectives is packed with brilliant plot twists and characters that you can’t help but love, and it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. This film is set in the fictional town, Derrybrook, in England and follows two sheep, Lily (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Mopple (Chris O’Dowd), and a policeman (Nicholas Braun) who are solving the murder of a loving and caring shepherd, George (Hugh Jackman). In the past, George would read murder mystery novels to his sheep every night, which unintentionally turned them into skilled detectives. When he is suddenly found dead, the flock decides to use everything they’ve learned from his stories to uncover the truth themselves. I highly recommend this film! Firstly, the cast is phenomenal, especially with Hugh Jackman playing George, as he brings warmth and humor to him. Nicholas Braun captures the cluelessness of Officer Tim Derry perfectly. Secondly, the animation is spectacular; the film seamlessly integrates the cartoon sheep characters with the real world and human characters. I found it especially fascinating how puppets and CGI are combined to cleverly bring the sheep characters to life. The film was shot in rural England, which perfectly captures the pasture and the farm setting. The movie combines humor with suspense in a beautiful way, where I could be laughing one moment but appalled by a shocking twist the next. The film’s message is that believing in yourself can help you overcome even the toughest and scariest challenges. The movie also shows the importance of reading, showing how it empowers everyone, even sheep. Even though they are heavily underestimated, by using their intelligence, and what they learned from the novels that were read to them, along with their natural curiosity, they were able to solve George’s murder. I give The Sheep Detectives 5 out of 5 and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults.
