This presentation is part of the panel entitled 'Beyond the Liberal “Peace”: Managing Deep Difference in the Umma', centering on the question: How can the Umma strengthen unity without requiring uniformity? Dr. Ahab Bdaiwi reflects on how Muslims might cultivate the intellectual and ethical capacities required to manage profound disagreement without reducing it to hostility. He argues for the creation of “critical spaces” in which difficult questions can be addressed honestly, disagreement can be expressed openly, and scholars can model forms of intellectual engagement that wider communities might emulate. Drawing on Islamic intellectual history, Dr. Bdaiwi challenges the assumption that serious commitment to truth requires an exclusive confidence in one’s own perspective. He points to the historical accommodation of multiple canonical Qur’anic recitations and to the intellectual fluidity of early Muslim scholarship as examples of difference existing within shared commitments. Because human beings inevitably encounter truth through particular histories, experiences, and inherited traditions, he argues, intellectual seriousness should be accompanied by epistemic humility. Dr. Ahab Bdaiwi is University Lecturer in Arabic and Medieval Philosophy and Late Antique Intellectual History at Leiden University. His research encompasses Arabic philosophy and theology, Shiʿi intellectual history, Qur’anic studies, manuscripts, and the religious and philosophical worlds of Late Antiquity and early Islam. He founded the Leiden University Shiʿi Studies Initiative and the Leiden University Centre for Islamic Thought and History. This presentation was delivered at the Ummatics Conference 2026, The Strategic Umma: Managing Difference, Thinking Beyond Secularism, and Building Future Impact, held in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, in collaboration with the International University of Sarajevo. #ummatics #UmmaticsConference2026 👉 If you found this video insightful, consider subscribing to the Ummatics Institute channel and activating notifications so you never miss our latest updates.
