Where was the Land of Punt? Around 1470 BCE, the Egyptian pharaoh Hatshepsut sent five ships to Punt, a land Egypt had traded with for about a thousand years. On the shore the Egyptians met its ruler, Parahu, and his wife, Ati, the Queen of Punt. This history documentary follows that voyage and what its record can and cannot tell us. Hatshepsut had the expedition carved into the walls of her temple at Deir el-Bahari in Thebes. The reliefs show the stilt houses of Punt, a cargo of myrrh, ebony, ivory and gold, and living myrrh trees carried aboard in baskets. They also hold the only portrait we have of a queen of Punt, and Egyptian carvers made it. On the temple walls the people of Punt appear as subjects bringing tribute. Historians read the voyage as trade between two independent powers. No Puntite city has been found, and no inscription written by Punt itself. In 2020, a team led by Nathaniel Dominy tested baboons mummified in ancient Egypt. The animals were born in a region across Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and parts of Somalia and Yemen. The strongest evidence now points to the southern Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. Puntland, in the northeast of Somalia, still carries the name.
