We're a car repair garage… so naturally, someone brought us a BOAT to fix. 😂 This time G, our mechanic/electrician at The Car Edition, swapped cars for something slightly more aquatic after we were asked to investigate an electrical fault on a Bayliner 195. Every time the ignition was switched on, the dashboard displayed a “ProG” error and wouldn't operate correctly. At first glance, it looked like we could be dealing with some kind of programming, communication or electronic issue. But rather than throwing parts at it, G started investigating. The dashboard/instrument unit was removed from the Bayliner and brought back to The Car Edition workshop in Warboys, Huntingdon, where we could properly strip it down and inspect the electronics. And that's when things got interesting... Once we got down to the PCB/circuit board, there was significant corrosion present. G carefully cleaned the motherboard, inspected the solder joints and re-soldered components on the circuit board. During the investigation, we also discovered two small electronic components that had actually burnt out. Was the “ProG” message actually a programming problem? That's what the symptom initially appeared to suggest, but on this particular Bayliner the underlying problem was hardware-related. After opening the dashboard electronics, we found corrosion on the circuit board as well as two damaged electronic components. This is exactly why proper electrical diagnosis matters. A message on a display doesn't necessarily mean the answer is to start programming modules or replacing expensive assemblies. Sometimes you need to get considerably deeper into the electronics. Marine electronics are particularly vulnerable to moisture and corrosion, and manufacturer troubleshooting information for marine instrumentation also identifies corroded electrical connections and communication faults as potential sources of instrument problems. Car mechanics fixing boats?! We normally spend our days diagnosing and repairing cars, but the principles of electrical diagnosis don't suddenly disappear when you put the vehicle in water. Voltage, resistance, circuit boards, solder joints and burnt components are still voltage, resistance, circuit boards, solder joints and burnt components. Although we're not sure G is ready to call himself a marine engineer just yet. 😂 With everyone seemingly buying yachts at the moment, perhaps we need to start building a bigger workshop...
