Climbing from 790 to 2,035 meters, this 37.6-kilometer journey leaves the familiar image of Chongqing far below and reveals a completely different world high in the Daba Mountains. The immersive 4K drive begins outside Hongchiba Toll Station in Wuxi County, Chongqing. After leaving the toll-gate area, the entire recorded route follows the ordinary mountain roads S201 and X010; no expressway driving is included. Over 55 minutes, the road gains 1,245 meters in elevation, winding through valleys, rural settlements, forested slopes, steep gradients and long sequences of mountain curves before reaching the parking area of Hongchiba Scenic Area. Hongchiba lies in the highlands of the Daba Mountains in northeastern Chongqing. It is both a national forest park and a national AAAA-rated tourist attraction. The wider scenic area rises roughly from 1,800 to 2,630 meters and combines alpine grasslands, dense forests, canyons, streams and karst landforms. Ancient water systems and long-term karst erosion helped shape the broad upland basins, grasslands and underground waterways seen here today. Some sections may resemble the vast mountain roads of western Sichuan, but this landscape belongs to Chongqing’s own remote Daba Mountain region. Historically, Hongchiba was known as Wanqingchi, a name recorded in geographical works from the Song dynasty. Local chronicles and research also associate the area with Huang Xie, Lord Chunshen, one of the celebrated Four Lords of the Warring States period. The wider Wuxi region carries an equally deep cultural legacy shaped by ancient Wu traditions, thousands of years of salt production and old salt-and-horse trade routes crossing the Qinba Mountains. For generations, Hongchiba’s elevation and isolation made it difficult to reach. New expressway connections, upgraded regional roads, tourism routes and visitor facilities are gradually opening this highland to more travelers. Hongchiba Toll Station now serves as an important gateway, but the road shown here remains a genuine 1,245-meter mountain ascent filled with changing scenery, gradients and curves. Each season transforms Hongchiba. Spring brings alpine rhododendrons and fresh greenery; summer offers cool temperatures, camping and clear night skies; autumn colors the forests of the Daba Mountains; and winter often covers the highlands in snow, creating a rare southern Chinese snow landscape. Filmed on May 4 under mostly sunny skies, this drive captures the bright valleys, forests and mountain roads of late spring.
