In the high, unyielding landscapes of Ladakh, a young boy named Sonam grew up under the stern words of his father: “If you choose this subject, don’t ask me for a single rupee.” Sonam replied simply, “Thank you.” And thus began a journey fueled not by wealth—but by conviction. Money was scarce. Yet Sonam dove into science with whatever meager resources he had. One shocking fact pierced his heart: in Ladakh, nearly 97% of 10th graders were failing. Sonam understood this — it was not the children who were at fault. The system was. From that realization, SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) was born — not a place for mere theory, but a living laboratory where practice, curiosity, and innovation ruled. At SECMOL, students don’t just study; they grow their own food, harness solar energy, and learn by doing. Sonam and his students built the Ice Stupa — a man-made glacier that stores winter water and releases it in warm months. They also developed solar-heated tents for the Indian Army operating at freezing altitudes. Today, Sonam Wangchuk — often called the real-life Phunsukh Wangdu of 3 Idiots — fights for Ladakh’s rights, education, and environment. His work proves that change is possible when you turn system failures into creative solutions. #sonamwangchuk #ladakh #secmol #icestupa #realphunsukhwangdu #ladakhrights #ladakhprotest #educationreform
