Goldsboro, 1961: a B-52 broke apart over North Carolina and dropped two hydrogen bombs. One ran its firing sequence down to a single switch. On January 24, 1961, a B-52G on airborne alert out of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base lost fuel from its right wing and came apart over Faro, near Goldsboro. Five of the eight crew lived. Two Mark 39 bombs, each rated at 3.8 megatons, fell into the farm fields below. One came down under its parachute with nearly every step of its arming sequence complete; its arm/safe switch was on Safe. The other hit a swamp at about 700 mph, and its switch read Arm, but that bomb could not fire.
