Many of us have had the experience of staying up after a long day, scrolling on social media for hours, and regretting the next morning. You might even do this repeatedly, and exhaustion leads to guilt as you chalk it up to a lack of self-control. But have you ever taken the time to ask yourself why this happens? It turns out this phenomenon has a name: revenge bedtime procrastination. It’s caused by exhaustion with the mundanity or intensity of one’s life, and the need to unwind whenever one gets the chance. High schooler Rayna Kumar discusses, based on her experiences with revenge bedtime procrastination, how to deal with these feelings by tackling the root of the problem rather than simply pushing yourself to sleep earlier. Rayna Kumar is a junior at Lynbrook High School in San Jose, CA. She is a content creator and award-winning writer who hosts Cognitive Corner, a youth-led podcast at the intersection of AI, neuroscience, and cognitive science. Through her research experiences and interviews with scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators, Rayna delves into the mysteries of the brain and how artificial intelligence can help illuminate the ways we think, learn, and make decisions. She also serves as Vice President of the Aletheia Club, a student publication where she writes and edits articles on the psychological dimensions of adolescent dreams, burnout, trauma, and mental health. She is passionate about giving back to her community and volunteers at her local library and with the World Literacy Foundation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
