After the Commercial Tax Department of Karnataka, now four more states Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are asking for the data of the annual turnover of traders from UPI apps and payment aggregators. This is happening because the government wants to ensure that all traders with an annual turnover of more than Rs 40 lakh are registered for GST. This move has created an atmosphere of fear among traders and they are thinking of returning to cash. In Karnataka, traders have even threatened a shutdown in protest against this. On July 16, small traders in Karnataka have threatened a statewide shutdown on July 25 in protest against the GST demand notice. These traders include spices, bakery, tea and coffee shops. This move may affect digital payments. If traders return to cash, the use of UPI may decrease. GST notices are only asking traders to register with the tax department and give an account of their turnover. This is not a notice to pay tax immediately. An official of a big bank said that "This increase is not good for digital payments in the country. This is a matter of tax and UPI apps, NPCI, or RBI cannot find a solution to it.
