Officers found her lifeless in an upstairs bedroom, and the neighbor’s husband described a man he’d seen fleeing down the driveway. That description led police to the man’s nephew, who named him as 32-year-old Tony Jackson, Matyka’s ex-boyfriend and the girls’ stepfather, released from prison only two weeks earlier. Hours later Tony called the police and turned himself in, but he insisted he was innocent. At the house, detectives found that the weapon was missing, that someone had come in through a ground-floor window leaving dirty footprints toward the laundry room, and that every security camera had been unplugged, which only someone who knew where they were could have done. In his interview, Tony admitted he’d knocked on Matyka’s door earlier that evening and had helped install some of the cameras, but he denied ever going back. The daughters told a very different story: Matyka had a new partner over that night, Tony showed up and left when he saw him, and after the visitor went home the girls heard a noise, found the cameras disconnected, and discovered Tony hiding behind the laundry room curtain. The older girl saw him confront and attack her mother before both sisters escaped. Tony stayed cold and kept to his account, even with the girls whose names he had tattooed on his body pointing to him. The physical evidence filled the gap: shoes in a bag at his brother’s house matched the footprints at the scene, and a friend of Matyka’s came forward with her last texts, saying Tony had been banging on her door and watching the house. The friend also said Tony had once told Matyka he’d been waiting five years to end her life, an incident that sent him back to prison on a parole violation, so detectives believed he blamed her for the extra time and resented her moving on. He planned around the cameras he had helped put up but didn’t account for the two girls, and in September 2025 he pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life plus seven additional years.
