HINDU WEDDINGS: HAVE WE FORGOTTEN THE SACRED? Reflections of a Hindu Priest After More Than Three Decades of Weddings In this interview, Srivatsa Govinda Dasa, harmonium teacher, kirtan singer and Sri Vaishnava devotee, interviews Hindu priest and author Pandit Krishna Kripa Dasa (Juan Carlos Ramchandani) about his more than three decades of experience officiating Hindu weddings in Spain and internationally. Drawing from both positive and challenging experiences, Pandit Krishna Kripa Dasa explores the sacred meaning of Vivaha Samskara and some of the changes he has witnessed in Hindu weddings over the years. How can we preserve tradition while remaining open to modernity? How much can a ceremony be adapted before it loses its spiritual identity? Where does the sacred ceremony end and the spectacle begin? What should be the relationship between the couple, their families, the pandit, photographers, wedding planners, musicians and other professionals involved in the celebration? The interview also addresses the importance of preparation, punctuality, respect for the sacred fire and mantras, appropriate behaviour during the ceremony, the role and responsibilities of the pandit, and the need to find a healthy balance between tradition and the realities of contemporary weddings. Pandit Krishna Kripa Dasa also shares personal anecdotes gathered throughout his years of priestly service — some inspiring, others humorous or challenging — as examples from which lessons can be learned. This interview does not seek to generalise about Hindu weddings, families, communities or wedding professionals. The experiences and anecdotes discussed are personal observations from the pandit's own journey, and no individuals, families, venues, cities or countries are identified. The intention is not to criticise, but to encourage reflection on how the beauty, dignity and sacred character of Vivaha Samskara can be preserved while allowing Hindu weddings to remain meaningful and relevant in the modern world. A Hindu wedding can certainly be joyful, colourful and celebratory. But at its heart, it remains a samskara — a sacred rite of passage. The photographs will preserve the memory of your wedding. The vows you make before Agni are the heart of your marriage.
