In 2012, two metal detectorists searching a field in Grouville, Jersey uncovered what would become the largest Celtic coin hoard ever discovered. Reg Mead and Richard Miles had spent more than 30 years searching the area after hearing a story about a hoard of coins that had been disturbed there years earlier. What they eventually found was enormous. Known as the Le Câtillon II Hoard, it contained around 70,000 Iron Age coins, with 69,347 commonly recorded in the final count. Most were silver-copper alloy coins associated with the Coriosolitae, a Celtic people from what is now Brittany, alongside coins from the Osismii, Redones and Baiocasses and examples minted in southern Britain. But the coins were only part of the discovery. Hidden among them were 11 gold torcs, silver and gold jewelry, glass beads, gold sheet and scrap, silver-alloy ingots and a textile bag containing precious metal objects. Conservators also discovered something exceptionally rare: a surviving Iron Age leather purse, still containing coins. Even a much older Bronze Age spearhead had been placed near the bottom of the deposit. The mass of coins measured roughly 1.4 metres across and was around 15 cm deep. The coins themselves weighed hundreds of kilograms, while the complete block of earth and objects weighed around a tonne when it was lifted from the ground. The hoard was painstakingly dismantled coin by coin, with the position of individual objects recorded in 3D. It was probably buried around 50–30 BC, during a period of enormous upheaval as Julius Caesar conquered Gaul. Whether it was hidden for safekeeping, deposited deliberately as an offering, or buried for another reason is still unknown. More than 2,000 years later, Le Câtillon II remains one of the most extraordinary Iron Age discoveries ever made in Western Europe. #Archaeology #celtics #history #AncientHistory #Jersey
