Looking for cooler temperatures & adventure, we headed up Hwy 87 towards Payson, AZ. The Sunflower Mine loop ranges from 3,800 to 5,400 feet. It’s 57 miles from my home in Apache Junction, AZ, to the staging area. onX Offroad shows the Sunflower Mine loop as an 8/10. It’s only 16 miles but takes 4 hours and 15 minutes. The reviews from the Jeep drivers suggest at least 35” tires & 2” lifts. The ledge trail collapsed a while back, so the wash is now the trail! They warn that the 3-to-4-mile wash section is very technical. Bring tools & parts since things will break! One group said it took them 6 hours with stops & repairs. They also mentioned that AZ pin-stripping is impossible to avoid! Can an almost stock UTV/SxS survive this very technical trail? Two of us decided to find out.
