Explore how the world’s largest shipbuilding nations changed from 1950 to 2026 in this animated country ranking. This visualization compares countries by the total gross tonnage (GT) of merchant ships completed each year. Watch the dramatic rise and decline of major shipbuilding powers including the United Kingdom, West Germany, Sweden, France, Japan, South Korea, China, the United States, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Soviet Union and many others. The shipbuilding data mainly includes large commercial and merchant vessels such as: • Container ships • Bulk carriers • Oil and chemical tankers • LNG and LPG carriers • General cargo ships • Ro-Ro and vehicle carriers • Passenger and cruise ships The values are measured in Gross Tonnage (GT), not the number of ships. GT is a standardized measure related to the overall internal volume and size of ships. Historical states such as West Germany, East Germany, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia are shown separately during the periods in which they existed, while successor countries appear separately in later years. Historical shipbuilding statistics are incomplete for some countries and years. Where complete annual figures were unavailable, historical records, benchmark data and reconstructed estimates were used for visualization purposes. Data Sources: • UNCTAD — Review of Maritime Transport • UNCTADstat — Shipbuilding Statistics • Lloyd’s Register / Lloyd’s Register Foundation • Historical World Fleet Statistics • National shipbuilding and maritime industry records • Historical estimates and reconstructed data 2025 and 2026 figures may include estimates or projections based on the latest available shipbuilding data. #Shipbuilding #ShipbuildingCountries #LargestShipbuilders #WorldShipbuilding #ShipbuildingIndustry #MerchantShips #MerchantMarine #GrossTonnage #ContainerShips #BulkCarriers #OilTankers #LNGCarrier #CargoShips #CruiseShips #MaritimeIndustry #ShippingIndustry #Shipyards #ChinaShipbuilding #SouthKoreaShipbuilding #JapanShipbuilding #MaritimeHistory #IndustrialHistory #CountryRanking #BarChartRace #DataVisualization #WorldData
