Christmas Eve, 1945. In the hills outside Fayetteville, West Virginia, George and Jennie Sodder went to bed with nine of their ten children at home. Just after midnight came a strange wrong-number phone call. Then a bang on the roof, then smoke. George, Jennie and four of the children escaped. The ladder was missing, the trucks wouldn't start, the water barrel was frozen and the phone line had been cut. Five children, Maurice, Martha, Louis, Jennie and Betty, never came down. By morning, the house was gone. The family was told that no trace of the five children had been found. A coroner ruled it an accident and death certificates were issued within days, but the Sodders never believed it. A threat about smoke and children, a fire chief's buried box, a Smithsonian report and reported sightings across America kept them searching. A billboard on the highway asked one question for nearly 40 years. Then, in the late 1960s, a photograph arrived in the mail with a name written on the back. This is The Unburied Files, episode 8: the true story of the Sodder children, the strange details of that night, the family's decades-long search, and the case for and against the idea that the children survived. The case has never been solved.
