In this clip, Modestep frontman Josh Friend reveals his unsettling experiences touring with Lostprophets and their disgraced lead singer, Ian Watkins. Long before Watkins' horrific crimes became public knowledge, Josh recalls an atmosphere that left him deeply uncomfortable. But what was it about the Lostprophets frontman that seemed so sinister, and were there warning signs that only became clear after the truth emerged? https://www.youtube.com/@hereticsclips/videos Ian Watkins was once one of the most recognisable figures in British rock music. As the frontman of Lostprophets, he enjoyed international success, devoted fans and the privileges that came with being a major recording artist. But behind that public image was a disturbing reality that would eventually destroy his career and shock the music industry. For Josh Friend, who toured alongside Lostprophets with Modestep, the experience has taken on an entirely different meaning. Speaking to Andrew Gold, Josh reflects on the strange atmosphere surrounding Watkins and the behaviour that made him uneasy. At the time, Watkins was still a celebrated musician, and those working alongside him had no way of knowing the full extent of his offending. Looking back, however, Josh describes experiences that now raise uncomfortable questions. What did he notice about Watkins, and why did certain encounters leave such a lasting impression? The conversation examines how fame, influence and celebrity status can complicate people's perceptions of troubling behaviour. When someone is surrounded by loyal fans, successful management teams and an established reputation, can warning signs become easier to dismiss? And how do people distinguish between an eccentric rock-star persona and behaviour that genuinely deserves scrutiny? In 2013, Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison, with a further six years on licence, after admitting serious sexual offences involving children. His conviction prompted widespread horror and raised difficult questions about the allegations and concerns that had surfaced before his arrest. Andrew Gold and Josh Friend discuss the unsettling experience of looking back on someone whose public identity concealed such serious criminal behaviour. Josh also considers the wider culture of the music industry, where professional opportunities and unequal power relationships can make challenging established artists particularly difficult. But hindsight presents its own dangers. Recognising behaviour as disturbing after a conviction does not mean everyone who encountered Watkins understood what he was doing. Josh's account offers a personal perspective on the difference between feeling uncomfortable around someone and knowing the truth about their actions. What was it about Ian Watkins that Josh Friend found so sinister, and how has learning the truth changed his memories of touring with Lostprophets?
