The first time you get an F at school. It was a beautiful Monday morning, and Adam walked into school feeling like the smartest person alive. He had slept well, eaten breakfast, and even remembered to bring his homework. Today was going to be perfect. Then his math teacher, Mrs. Wilson, walked into the classroom holding a stack of test papers. “Good morning, everyone! I’ve finished grading your tests.” Suddenly, the classroom became quieter than a library during an exam. Adam smiled confidently. He wasn’t worried. After all, he had answered at least three questions without guessing. That had to count for something. Mrs. Wilson began handing out the papers. “Mia, eight out of ten. Excellent work! Lucas, seven out of ten. Not bad! Adam…” She paused. Adam sat up straight, ready to receive his well-deserved praise. “One out of ten.” The entire classroom went silent. Adam blinked. “Sorry, did you say one?” “Yes, Adam. One point.” He stared at the paper as if it were written in an ancient language. A giant red number stared back at him. ONE. He slowly raised his hand. “Excuse me, Mrs. Wilson. I think there might be a mistake.” She checked the paper. “Your name is correct, your answers are yours, and you even wrote your birthday in the corner.” Adam looked down. He had, in fact, written his birthday. “Well,” he said nervously, “at least you can confirm my identity.” His best friend, Jake, leaned over and whispered, “Bro, how did you get one point?” Adam whispered back, “I think the teacher felt sorry for me.” For the rest of the lesson, Adam couldn’t concentrate. Every time Mrs. Wilson mentioned numbers, he felt personally attacked. “If you have five apples and give away two…” Adam muttered, “I would never give away my apples. This is why I failed.” When the bell rang, he rushed home to tell his mother. He opened the front door and announced, “Mom, I have some good news and some bad news.” His mother looked concerned. “What’s the good news?” Adam took a deep breath. “I got the lowest score in the class.” She blinked. “And the bad news?” Adam slowly pulled the test paper from his backpack. “The lowest score is one out of ten.” His mother stared at the paper. Then she stared at Adam. Then she looked at the ceiling as if asking the universe for patience. “Adam, did you study?” “Of course!” he replied. “I studied for almost fifteen minutes!” His mother crossed her arms. “And what did you learn?” Adam thought carefully. “That I should probably study longer.” His mother sighed. “Fine. From today on, we’re studying together every evening.” Adam froze. “Every evening?” “Every evening.” “Even Friday?” “Especially Friday.” Adam felt as if he had received a second F, but this time in life. That evening, his mother sat beside him with textbooks, notebooks, and enough practice questions to last until next summer. After an hour, Adam finally understood fractions. After two hours, he could solve equations. After three hours, he began questioning every decision he had ever made. “Mom,” he said, “I think I understand math now.” She smiled proudly. “Really?” Adam nodded. “Yes. I understand that math is the reason I have no free time.” The next day, Mrs. Wilson announced another short quiz. Adam sat up straight, sharpened his pencil, and confidently answered every question. When the papers came back, he had scored nine out of ten. His classmates cheered, and Jake gave him a high five. Adam grinned. “See? One bad grade doesn't define you!” Then Mrs. Wilson added, “Excellent improvement, Adam. By the way, yesterday's test was out of twenty.” Adam's smile disappeared. He looked at his paper again. Nine out of ten today. One out of twenty yesterday. He slowly turned to Jake. “Bro… I think I just discovered a new fear.” Jake nodded seriously. “What's that?” Adam whispered, “The next test.”
