Session Title: AutoVacuum - Tuning and Monitoring Speaker(s): Lloyd Albin, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Track: Essentials Session Description Many PostgreSQL teams struggle with queries that gradually become slower the longer an application runs—only to return to lightning-fast performance after a restart or a fresh restore from backup. In this session, Lloyd Albin breaks down why this happens and how issues in AutoVacuum, AutoAnalyze, and indexing can silently accumulate until they impact performance at scale. Through real examples from production environments, Lloyd explains how common workload patterns—such as high-churn small tables, large tables with continuous millions-per-hour row changes, and heavy transactional reuse of indexed values—can lead to bloated tables, outdated statistics, and inefficient execution plans. He highlights the typical symptoms administrators see, why they temporarily “self-fix” after restarts or restores, and what tuning and monitoring strategies can prevent performance degradation before it begins. This talk is designed for anyone responsible for maintaining healthy PostgreSQL environments, especially those supporting high-volume applications where vacuum behavior directly affects query performance.
