How did Jerry Jones make his money? The short answer is oil first, football second, and everything else after that. The Cowboys made him famous, but the fortune started in Texas oil fields decades before he ever bought a team. I was reading a Forbes breakdown this week that laid out the whole picture. Jones started as a wildcatter in the 1970s with a company called Jones Oil and Land Lease. He drilled thirteen wells and twelve of them hit oil. In 1982, he bought oil leases for fifteen million dollars, spent another thirty five million drilling, and four years later a partner bought him out for one hundred seventy five million dollars. That is the foundation. Then came the Cowboys. In 1989, he bought the team for about one hundred forty million dollars, the highest price ever paid for an NFL franchise at the time. Today, Forbes values the Cowboys at seventeen billion dollars, and Jones owns it outright with no debt and no partners. He did not stop there. He is the majority owner of Comstock Resources, a natural gas company. He owns land through an entity called Blue Star. He has a stake in Legends Hospitality. He even owns Papa John's franchises. Forbes puts his family fortune at twenty three point two billion dollars as of this month, up from nineteen point five billion last year. This video breaks down the timeline, the numbers, and the deals that built one of the biggest fortunes in American sports. If you follow the NFL or business news, this video is for you.
