“F*** it, f*** it, f*** it.” For quite a while after my divorce, those words became a bit of a mantra. I remember standing outside a drinks party on my own, nervous about walking through the door and very aware that I was no longer arriving as part of a couple. The first time, I did what many of us do — put on a smile and tried to look absolutely fine. Later, I realised how exhausting the pretending could be. In this video, I look at what can happen when we move from being part of a “we” back to being a “me”. How much of ourselves do we adjust in relationships? Why can it be difficult to work out what we actually want afterwards? And is confidence really about getting rid of the nerves — or being able to walk through the door with them still there? I also share one of my favourite stories from When We Becomes Me about a woman who knew exactly where her boundaries were: “I'll do lunch and dinner... but I don't do bed and breakfast.” Sometimes finding yourself again isn't an enormous reinvention. It starts with noticing what you want, what you don't want, and when you're trying rather too hard to look fine.
