Three months after the devastating loss of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, his older brother Kurt Busch is finally speaking — and the words he shared on the Today show on August 21 are absolutely heartbreaking. In his first network interview since Kyle's death on May 21 at age 41, Kurt broke down in tears as he recalled the final moments he spent at his brother's hospital bedside. "I was at the hospital. I was there all day, hoping, praying, hoping for a turnaround," Kurt said, his voice breaking. "I said, 'I got you man. Come on. I got you. I got you. Come on, be strong.'" He paused, then added quietly: "It just wasn't fair." Kyle had initially thought he was dealing with a sinus cold while racing at Watkins Glen on May 10. He kept pushing through — winning a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Dover just six days before he died — before suffering a medical emergency in a racing simulator on May 20. He was rushed to hospital by ambulance and never recovered. Severe pneumonia had progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming complications that took his life the following day. Their father Tom chose not to see Kyle in his final hours, wanting to remember him the way he was. "There is no book. There is no outline on what we're supposed to do right now," Kurt said. "There's days of anger, disgust. There's days of 'Why?'" Kurt also reflected on the unique silent language the brothers shared on the racetrack: "Him and I were carbon copies of each other. We could speak on track without saying a word. I miss the words that we never spoke to each other." He has since begun mentoring Kyle's 11-year-old son Braxton, who he says is already showing serious racing talent. Kyle Busch won Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019 and holds the all-time record with 234 combined wins across NASCAR's top three national series.
