Welcome to Infectious Diseases in Focus. I'm Alberto Saraiva Tiburcio, a board-certified infectious-disease physician with a Master's in Medicine and an MBA in Hospital Infection Control. I am CBIC-certified — holding the Certification in Infection Prevention and Control, the international gold-standard credential issued by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology. Staphylococcus — staph — is one of the most common bacteria in the world. Most of the time it's harmless. But when it gets inside the body through a cut or wound, it can cause infections that range from a minor boil to a life-threatening emergency. Dr. Alberto explains all of them: what they look like, when to see a doctor, and the warning signs that mean you need emergency care immediately. 🩹 COMMON SKIN INFECTIONS: 🔴 BOIL (Furuncle): • Painful red lump around a hair follicle · fills with pus • Treat with warm compresses several times a day • See a doctor if it doesn't improve, is on the face, or is very large • NEVER squeeze or pop — can push bacteria deeper or spread infection 🔴 ABSCESS: • Larger pocket of pus — usually needs medical drainage (incision and drainage) • Provides almost immediate relief once drained 🔴 CELLULITIS: • Spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pain in skin • Needs antibiotics — see a doctor promptly • ⚠️ RED STREAKS spreading from the area = go to doctor TODAY (infection spreading via lymph system) 🏥 SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS: • Empyema — pus around the lungs (after staph pneumonia) • Bacteremia — bacteria in the bloodstream → can reach any organ • Staph pneumonia — high fever, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath • Endocarditis — heart valve infection · persistent fever + fatigue = see doctor 🚨 SEPSIS — CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES IF YOU SEE: • High fever OR very low temp with intense chills • Heart racing significantly faster than normal / rapid breathing • Sudden confusion, disorientation, or extreme drowsiness ← especially alarming • Severe unexplained pain • Cold, clammy, or discolored skin (pale, bluish, mottled) • Extreme weakness or feeling faint → Every hour of delayed treatment in sepsis worsens the outcome. Do NOT wait. 🛡️ PREVENTION: ✓ Clean and cover all cuts and scrapes promptly ✓ Wash hands regularly with soap and water ✓ Don't share towels, razors, or personal items ✓ Watch skin infections — expanding redness or fever = see a doctor early 🔗 Full article: https://www.no-infection.com/blog/articles/staph-infections-explained.html 🔗 CDC Staph: https://www.cdc.gov/hai/organisms/staph.html 🔗 CDC Sepsis: https://www.cdc.gov/sepsis/index.html ⚕️ Dr. Alberto — MD, Infectious Disease Specialist | No Infection Consulting & Education ⚠️ Educational content only — always consult a healthcare professional for medical advice. #StaphInfection #Staphylococcus #Boil #Cellulitis #Sepsis #SkinInfection #PublicHealth #NoInfection ⏱️ Chapter Timestamps 0:00 Introduction — What Is Staph?
