(During the Fourth Industrial Revolution) Abstract: We note the essential human qualities and capabilities that have come about through evolution of the human brain, in particular emergence of mirror neurons, and structures for language and cognitive functions. We will, in particular, note memetic evolution of human societies as defined by Richard Dawkins and its accelerating speed. We note that humans are predisposed to learning from one another and have a basic urge to teach, in matters of need, interest and value. The talk will dwell on the development of technical education during the various stages of Industrial Revolution. It will discuss its needs and character. It will note the increasing rapidity, diversity, complexity and depth of changes that have taken place especially since World War II, and the challenges these have posed to education design and delivery. The problems have become acute with mind-boggling speed and complexity of changes taking place currently, in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We will discuss the problems of education design and delivery and the current trends. Examples will be mainly from the domain of Electrical and Computer Science and Technology. Speaker Biography: Professor Prabhu served IIT-Kanpur during 1971-1998 as Professor of Electrical Engineering, Head of Electrical Engineering department and Dean of Faculty Affairs. Subsequently he was a Visiting Professor at IIITM-Kerala and IIITB and an Academic Advisor IIITB. His teaching and research activity has spanned control of distributed parameter systems, electric drives, robot path planning, power system dynamics and stabilizers, HVDC & FACTS controllers, voltage stability, industrial informatics, and discrete event systems. Professor Prabhu did BE (EE) from Univ. of Mysore, M.Tech (EE: Control) from IIT Kharagpur, and M.A.Sc and Ph.D from Univ. of Toronto.
