Barracuda is India’s fastest solar-electric boat. It was built by Kochi-based Navalt. Barracuda is a 14-metre-long vessel with a 2-kilowatt-peak solar array on the top. This helps Barracuda generate electricity for the boat which is then stored in a battery that has 300 kilowatt-hours of capacity. This battery powers two electric motors capable of producing up to 150 kilowatts each, meaning that Barracuda can reach speeds of up to 15 knots or 28 kilometres per hour in full electric mode. In 2017 Navalt built Aditya, India’s first solar-electric ferry, which carries up to 75 passengers. To pull this off, Navalt reduced the boat’s weight from 35 tonnes to 17 tonnes using materials like fibre-reinforced plastic. They also redesigned the hull to reduce the power needed to overcome drag from around 45 kilowatts to just 15 kilowatts. Since building Aditya in 2017, Navalt has applied these same ideas to a bunch of other boats, including SRAV, which is a solar-electric fishing boat, and Indra, which is a 100-passenger solar-electric cruise boat. Navalt has built 80+ vessels at this point. They're trying to build even larger and faster boats now. They’re currently building two 100-tonne solar-electric RoRo vessels for Keralam. After that Navalt says they plan to build hydrofoil vessels capable of reaching speeds of around 35 knots.
